Also make sure you have a nice and bright viewfinder - research it. So AutoFocus (AF) lenses really only carry extra weight and extra cost.

When I have to focus on things super far away (planets), Manual is the only way to do it. I do not know about Canon, but you have a large assortment of older lenses that are Nikon or even Vivitar branded wide angle lenses (to get a wide swath of the sky) that are dirt cheap but extremely sharp and good in low light. And it is dirt cheap compared to a "modern" designed AF VR/IS 500mm With astrophotography, and I know with Nikon, you can buy some awefully cheap high quality lenses that were made years ago.įor instance, my coffee can 500mm Reflex lens (my telescope training lens) is fully manual with a fixed aperture (just like telescopes). I cannot find alot of atro pictures made with the D7100 so it's hard to make a comparison, but is it really that much worse than the Canon 70D or are it simpy less well made pictures I have been finding online?ĭoes anyone have some nighttime pictures made with the D7100 that are in the ballpark of the Canon 70D pictures I posted? I really love everything the D7100 offers, but when I compare it's nighttime performance to the canon counterpart (as far as I've seen) I can't help but doubt if the Nikon really is what I want.Īlso, since you mentioned it, look into lenses FIRST Canon 70d + Sigma 18-35 1.8 | Flickr - Photo Sharing! are a few examples). Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 + Canon 70d | Flickr - Photo Sharing!, Freak Storm | Flickr - Photo Sharing! and Milky Way. While still of a pretty good quality, it just seems like it isn't even remotely in the ballpark of the newer Canon 70D Camera ( Lions Island at Night. The nighttime pictures simply do not impress me at all, an example is David Kingham Photography | Nikon D7100 - Cropped Sensor for Night Photography?. One thing that bothers me though is the night performance I find when looking for pictures online. May be just what you need.I am in the market for my first dSLR camera and I am heavily considering the Nikon D7100.

Unfortunately it only runs on Windows PC but when I was beta testing for them, I ran it successfully in Windows running as a VM process on my Apple Mac OS10.9. Not only will it shoot tether, you can control your Nikon from it and you can see the image and live view when tethered.

I guess I just don't trust my eyesight to judge the image looking at the 3" LCD - just got use to looking a results on a 15".īut all is not lost! If you want to do what you want, you can download this program and run it - DigiCamControl. What I see on the laptop screen is what they see on the TV. The camera is tethered to my laptop (15") next to me and have a long HDMI cable from my laptop to the TV.

When I shoot models in studio with clients, I set up a 42" TV for them to watch. I know it's possible but maybe only canon users can do it. I still need to be able to look at my camera sometimes. I shoot tethered for the client parents and for the creative director not so much for myself. If you want to increase the speed, ie shorten the time of the image transfer, remove the SD card - you don't need it for tether shoot and when the camera don't have to write to the SD card and to the computer, the transfer is faster.Īnother advantage is that if after getting the lighting and composition correct on the image, and develop it, you can set the tether to use previous Develop settings (shadow, highlight, blacks, clarity, sharpness etc etc and apply it directly to all subsequent incoming images! Absolutely the most time saving feature when doing product photography. In other words, the whole point of shooting tether is so we can avoid having to review on the small LCD screen. So that's why LCD review is not available since it is not necessary when shooting tether. So after each shot, I review the image on my 15" screen before I go on to the next shot. The whole reason product photographers and model shoots in studios shoot tether is so you DON'T have to use the tiny LCD to review the last shot but to review it on the big computer screen. If you have a slow computer, it make take longer as the image has to write to the hard disk. Start tether mode, shoot and the image appears on the computer screen either in Grid View, Loupe View or even Develop view.

I use a D5000 or D5100 or sometimes D7100. I shoot tether only and with Lightroom 5.4 - that's all I do as I'm doing product photography. Oh, then it should just appear - takes less than a second. I use lightroom 5 and I have capture one but I'm not very comfortable with that yet. Just like how you would normally check a picture if you weren't shooting tethered. If I want to look at my lcd on the camera and review the picture I just took or the previous picture.
